A CYCLING ROCK SONG

© stfaivus,1996

More sands come

pushing me deeper

with each season sands come

pushing me down

pushing me down

I get buried

deep underground

I 'm pushed down

by the sands above

stone-leached cements

coming around

cold- pressed

I 'm tightly bound

Sedimentary can form

under the sea

under river beds and sand dunes

it can also be

Finally I realize

I'm in parts no more

I'm a new sedimentary rock

buried deep under the shore

I'm the one with fossils

the softest rock, they say

I can be rough, sandy,

chalky or clay

Sedimentary

is elementary

layers of sand

come from all over the land

and they turn to rock

now let 's rock

A sedimentary rock

under the sea I lay

but new sands keep piling up

having their say

So further down I go

I'm pushed down

heat and pressure’s  rising

I'm beginning to frown

Still more sediments come

further down I go

rising heat and pressure's

beginning to show

Melting pressing

too much on my back

my crystals're melting

I'm under attack

Now I'm coarse hard rock

my fossils are gone

I have bent lines

which my crystals are on

Deep in the earth

or around a magma-filled split

heat and pressure

get legit

I'm hard

and I can be coarse

my crystals had time to cool

of course

Metamorphic

I'm here to say

is when heat and pressure

have their way

Now I've been Igneous,

Sedimentary,and Metamorphic

where will I go next

my life isn't over yet

There' s a crack I could get messed up with

in the middle of the sea

melted rock pushing up

new basalt it will be

heavy iron black rock

making new ocean floor

at land old rock must make room

pushing back down to the core

Where ocean floor meets land

the heavy basalt buckles down

with water and friction

it  churns and melts underground

Old rock turns to new rock

melted again

it can cool underground

or shoot back to the surface again

Now our song ends

back where it began

rocks slowly changing

all over the land

Take any rock

heat and press

it becomes Metamorphic

Take any rock

melt and cool

it becomes Igneous

Take any rock erode,

cold press

it becomes Sedimentary

Metamorphic

I'm here to say

is when heat and pressure

have their way

Now don't make a fuss

here comes igneous

it' s when melted rock

cools in pools

Sedimentary

is elementary

layers of sand

come from all over the land

and they turn to rock

now let's rock

I begin as a hot liquid rock

down under the crust

part of the magma

pushing up

then I find a crack

a hole in the crust

near the boarder

I push up

to the surface

I push up

Volcano

I bubble up

to the surface

my melted rock escapes

So I chilled there a while

on the top of the mountain

volcano built

I lay there

igneous rock

on the volcano

takin' in the mountain air

Don't make a fuss

here comes igneous

it's when melted rock

cools in pools

Then comes the winds

and the rains

the erosion

breaking me down

the seasons

freezing water in my veins

and the sleet

breaking me down

I fall apart

give way to stress

I crack up

is this just a test?

I break down

into pebbles and sand

I flow down

through the rivers of our land

Weak acid rains

leaching my clays

the rain water

bringing me down

At last I rest here

on the bottom of the sea

I'm chillin'

new sands pressing above me

pressing me down

cold pressed

I'm reborn

Day by day

year by year

centuries millenniums

millions and billions of years
