Atom Bonds Model Steps
Circle Model (Bohr)
1. Draw circles for atoms. Small inner circle is nucleus. Second surrounding circle is the atom’s first electron shell. Third circle is the atom’s second electron shell. Fourth circle is the atom’s third electron shell.
2. Top atomic number is the number of electrons the atom has. Draw electrons on the electron shells from inner shells to outer shells. First shell holds 2 electrons. Second and third shells each hold 8 electrons.
3. Atoms want their outer shell to be full. Draw the atoms before the bond. Write how many electrons each atom wants to give or get.
4. Draw atoms after the bond. If the atoms both want to get electrons, draw ovals around their shared electrons. This is called a covalent, or sharing, bond.
5. If one atom want to get electrons and the other atom want to give electrons, electrons jump between atoms. This is called a ionic bond.
6. Draw atoms after an ionic bond. Draw the charge on each atom. Draw arrows showing how these opposite charges make the ionic atoms stick together.
